Anni, Rita and Karla were \"project hens\" to increase the pheasant population. Their task was to hatch the pheasant eggs and teach the pheasant chicks to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the bush hens (which are very brute and excellent fliers) had done their job, they were useless and should be slaughtered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2023, ten of these project hens were rescued from certain death. Three of them have taken up residence at our animal sanctuary and seven hens have been passed on to good hands in the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipsy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipsy moved to the sanctuary in June 2024 when she was about 8 weeks old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She came from a school project. The pupils hatched chicken eggs and only one chick hatched: Chipsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then she has lived with a pupil in her nursery and has never known any other chickens. She is therefore very attached to us humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chipsy is very people-oriented and didn't get on well with the chickens at first. We initially kept her separate with visual contact and supervised introductions. She is now fully integrated into the flock and is learning from the other chickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FRIEDA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frieda was rescued together with Paula because a breeder wanted to reduce his stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frieda moved into the sanctuary in October 2023 and has found her new home here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HENRY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

We took Henry in together with his son Louie in March 2022, as the two of them were no longer getting along with a rival in their old home. Unfortunately, things got so bad with them too some time later that Louie \"moved\" again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry is a gentleman and does a good job with his flock of hens. He also takes exemplary care of new arrivals to help them settle in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHNACK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

Like Schnik, Schnack belonged to the Asbach-G\u00fcnther (\u2020) team and has therefore been part of the sanctuary family from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Schnack lays an egg, the whole farm hears it because she announces it loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHNIK<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schnik originally belonged to the Asbach-G\u00fcnther (\u2020) team and has therefore been with the sanctuary from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schnik is the double Lottchen with Schnack. The two are inseparable and look quite similar. However, Schnik has black spots on his chest feathers, which Schnack has probably nipped off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SCHUPPE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schuppe moved to the sanctuary together with Shy, Berta (\u2020) and St\u00fcrmchen (\u2020) in July 2020. The 4 hens were rescued as they would otherwise have been \"ejected\" at just one year old, as is common practice in the laying industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schuppe is very people-oriented. If you spend time in the small animal enclosure, she likes to join you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SHY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shy moved into the Lebenshof together with Schuppe, Berta (\u2020) and St\u00fcrmchen (\u2020) in July 2020 and thus escaped the \"stabling\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shy took a long time to shed the traces of factory farming and needed extra attention. Today she is our sunshine and Joar's best friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as Shy's name is called, she comes running at lightning speed in the hope that there is something tasty to eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THEA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with Tara (\u2020) and Thilda (\u2020), Thea has been part of the sanctuary family since June 2023, adding to the flock of hens around Henry the cockerel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thea is friendly and trusting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
